Launched in 2020, SAINT Mxxxxxx (widely known as SAINT MICHAEL) is a highly sought-after Japanese luxury streetwear label. The brand quickly built a cult following for its premium, hand-processed garments that exude a distinctively worn-in, vintage appeal.

Establishment

SAINT MICHAEL was established in autumn 2020 by READYMADE designer Yuta Hosokawa and Los Angeles-based multi-disciplinary artist Cali Thornhill DeWitt. Hosokawa had already made a major global splash with his upcycled, military-fabric label READYMADE, which first introduced him and his network to DeWitt. Introduced by the Tokyo concept store GR8, the cross-continental duo bonded over a shared passion for authentic vintage apparel and detailed, hand-crafted design. Despite launching during the height of pandemic-related disruptions, their debut collection in Paris sold out globally almost immediately. Since its inception, the brand has garnered widespread acclaim for rejecting mass-produced fast fashion in favor of carefully aged, narrative-driven pieces that resonate heavily with modern subcultures and high-fashion enthusiasts alike.

About Designer

The brand is co-helmed by two distinct creative forces. Yuta Hosokawa, born in Osaka in 1982, is a renowned Japanese designer whose work seamlessly bridges fashion and art. Before dominating the streetwear sphere with READYMADE, he graduated from Tokyo’s Mode Academy and established his roots as a stylist. His meticulous eye for construction and garment finishing forms the backbone of SAINT MICHAEL’s quality. His partner, Cali Thornhill DeWitt, is an LA-based artist, photographer, and zine publisher. DeWitt boasts deep ties to underground subcultures, punk aesthetics, and the 1990s music scene, having notably collaborated with icons like Kurt Cobain early in his career. DeWitt's iconic typography, graffiti-style artistry, and anti-establishment messaging define the graphic language of the label. Together, they bring a perfect synthesis of Japanese production precision and unapologetic American punk-rock spirit.

Fashion Style

SAINT MICHAEL is celebrated for its "vintagemaxxing" or worn-in aesthetic, masterfully combining retro American streetwear with subcultural and religious iconography. Every garment is meticulously designed in Japan using specialized circular knitting machines to achieve maximum comfort and a true retro weight. The pieces feature specialized printing techniques that resist degradation over time, along with deliberate distressing, hand-fraying, and manual discoloration. These hand-processing techniques are used to recreate the organic fading of decades-old archival tees and hoodies. The visual style is heavily influenced by vintage rock, punk culture, 90s pop-culture, and occasionally dark or ironic religious themes. Oversized, relaxed silhouettes define their cut, which allows for effortless, modern layering alongside high-end avant-garde pieces. Ultimately, the brand's core ethos centers on the "beauty of aging," elevating everyday basics into unique, collectible works of wearable art.

Represented Collab Before

SAINT MICHAEL is highly regarded for its boundary-pushing collaborative projects. One of their most notable partnerships is with legendary pop-artist Takashi Murakami. The duo launched a joint brand project titled "mononoke・made," which perfectly harmonized Murakami's vivid artwork with Hosokawa’s meticulous garment construction. Another prominent partnership includes a mega-capsule with the Jordan Brand, featuring heavily distressed varsity jackets and graphic hoodies adorned with "Saint Jordan" motifs. SAINT MICHAEL has also collaborated with iconic Japanese streetwear legends like Bounty Hunter, merging punk-inspired skulls and graphic logos with their signature faded fabrics. Furthermore, they frequently collaborate with prominent cultural figures, tattoo artists, and vintage curators such as Doctor Wu, alongside iconic bands like the Sex Pistols. These collaborations consistently blend music, art, and high fashion into exclusive, highly sought-after capsules that celebrate both heritage and modern artistic commentary.
